Helping young people understand themselves in a changing world.

This work is for those who believe that understanding people is as important as educating them.

Young people are growing up in a highly complex environment, which is placing unprecedented demands on their nervous systems.

Alongside academic achievement, we must support them in navigating complexity, uncertainty and pressure, so that they understand themselves and find their place in the world.

Nervous System literacy encourages us to ask a different question.

What if we replaced "What's wrong with me?with…

"What might my nervous system be responding to?"

What becomes possible when we understand the nervous system?

Nervous system literacy isn't just about helping young people develop healthy coping strategies.

It's about enabling them to think critically, discover their strengths and build confidence and self-belief.

Introducing Nervous System Literacy

A practical introduction to the nervous system science of behaviour, wellbeing, learning and emotional regulation.

1.5-2 hour training | In-person or online | For staff and professionals

What we’ll explore:

  • Discover how the nervous system has evolved to respond to the world around us and why this matters today.

  • Understand how biology shapes behaviour, wellbeing, learning, relationships and performance.

  • Explore practical tools to support emotional regulation and co-regulation in everyday life.

  • Build greater clarity and confidence for supporting young people experiencing stress, anxiety and coping behaviours like self-harm.

What’s included:

  • 90–120 minute interactive session with time for questions

  • In person or online, recording available if required

  • Optional follow-on sessions for students, parents and leadership teams

  • Suitable for schools, colleges, universities and youth organisations

  • "The guidance you provided was tangible, helpful and reassuring. It was pitched well, so both experienced and less experienced staff were able to learn. They felt that your lived experience gave it an authenticity which was humbling."

    —Head of Year, Roedean School

  • "Thank you! Today was truly fascinating. Reviewing how the nervous system works, alongside discussing situations of self-harm, made the realities of these challenges feel much more tangible. I feel better equipped to respond to disclosures in a professional, supportive, and sensitive manner, and more aware that such situations can affect groups of students, not just individuals."

    — Pastoral lead, Roedean School

  • "I'm so please I signed up for this - well worth taking two hours out of my day to learn, reflect and discuss"

    — Head Teacher, Girl’s Day School

  • "When we talk to the young people about the science, they stop and listen. They are interested.

    – St George’s Lupset Youth Team

  • "I learnt a lot about why I self-harmed through counselling, but the science explains so much more"

    – Student, Age 17

  • "The fact that you're not a therapist brings a freshness. It's taking a new angle and taking it from a very practical angle that makes sense"

    – The Youth Association

A longer-term vision

Nervous system literacy could be one of the most important things we can teach young people, with the potential to become a shared language within education.

While this work is evolving, I'd love to hear from those who are interested in exploring how organisations might embed these ideas into everyday culture – supporting staff, students and families with a common understanding of how our nervous systems influence learning, behaviour, relationships and wellbeing.
